The Normal Cafe

Yun Chien Tsai

For the purpose of responding the logo of the shop and the idea of latte art, adopt curve line as the major element of our design. The rich layers and smooth lines of the entire space lead the customers’ eyes to the end of the shop gradually. Create an atmosphere in the way of conveying the essence of coffee. Main focus of the whole shop lays upon the Modbar Espresso System on the counter, where people can see how the baristas work directly from outside.

Intending to use the curved shape to connect and link the space, Yun Chien Tsai merges the curved design with the counter, which is the core of The Normal Cafe. The curved line stretches from the entrance to the end of the shop, creating a seamless flow. Mirrors are strategically placed to cover the columns inside the counter, minimizing visual barriers and allowing customers' views to flow freely. This design approach breaks the limitations of the building layout and enhances the overall visual experience.

The design of The Normal Cafe incorporates blue mosaic tiles, gray color, and wood textures as its main elements. One of the highlights of the space is the blue stone table on the curved counter, adding a touch of elegance. The wood texture on the ceiling creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, further extending the visual space. The lighting design complements the overall ambiance, enhancing the coffee shop experience.

Yun Chien Tsai carefully planned the location of each equipment and device in consideration of the brewing process. The main equipment, such as refrigerators, coffee machines, central water filtration systems, and storage space, are all placed in the cabinet under the counter. This circular flow model enables two or more baristas to work smoothly at the same time, ensuring efficient operations. The counter top is kept tidy, with only the Modbar Espresso System being exhibited, as it requires a relatively simple brewing process.

What sets The Normal Cafe apart from others is its emphasis on the visual experience of the coffee brewing process. The coffee machine is not just a device for making drinks; it is also a symbol of quality. When customers visit the cafe, their attention is immediately drawn to the barista. The process of coffee making is transformed into a captivating performance on stage, engaging and delighting customers.

The Normal Cafe was designed and realized in 2020 in Taipei, Taiwan. Yun Chien Tsai's research focused on emphasizing the visual experience of the coffee brewing process, recognizing the coffee machine as a symbol of quality. The design team overcame challenges posed by the narrow and long space, as well as the presence of columns, by integrating the curved shape with the counter. This allowed for a seamless flow and uninterrupted focus on the coffee brewing process.

The flowing curve in The Normal Cafe extends the space into a smooth and continuous surface. The combination of the column and the curved bar creates a central focal point in the store, where the coffee making process is presented as a performance for customers to experience. It's not just about drinking a cup of coffee; it's about immersing oneself in the process of creating a cup of coffee.
